Awesome kick mic!

I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with how much I love this bass drum mic. I was tempted to go with some of the "industry standards" for kick mics, but I was recommended the e902 by Chris at Sweetwater. I also viewed over 20 mic reviews/shootouts on YouTube and Sweetwater videos, and the e902 has overall the best representation/reproduction of a bass drum that I found.

Great low end, punch, warmth, fullness, with nice attack/click from my wood bass drum beater. All the other kick mics I heard were "boxy", "flat", "thuddy", "whimpy",... and sounded artificial. Thank you to Sweetwater and all the YouTube guys for doing those reviews - very helpful!

I used to have a couple Beyerdynamic M380 bass drum mics (lost them in a fire), and they had the same incredible low end, punch, depth,.. the M380's are now extremely hard to find and run about $ - $ for a vintage mic. The e902 is about as close to the M380 mic that I have found,... at a fraction of the cost. The e902 is also built like a tank, very rugged - solid!

My only complaint (even though I'm still giving 5 stars), is the mounting apparatus (as mentioned in other reviews). It's not constructed in a very usable design, especially if the mic is used in a port hole. The mounting apparatus tends to get in the way when searching for just the right mic position. I ended up finding a solution, and that was purchasing an Audio Technica AT-8459 swivel-mount-mic-clamp-adapter. This adapter is the bomb - and fixed the issue I had with the e902 mount (see pics). I don't like using mic stand boom arms, so this AT-8459 adapter did the trick. I have a nice sturdy/compact mic stand for the e902, in just the right position.

Overall, I highly recommend the Sennheiser e902 as a bass drum mic! I'm curious to try it out on my floor toms (which I haven't done yet),....

Awesome for mid to large toms

Phenomenal mic for mid to large Tom's. If you want a step up from the standard Shure SM57 try these puppies on your Tom's. You won't be disappointed. Thank you Mitch Fraizer in the Sweetwater store for this recommendation. You were right !

Great Decision

Had issues with capturing the kick drum for years. The e902 has made my life so much easier! Seriously! I've tried tracking with the D112, Audix, MD 421, boundary mics, various outside condensers, etc...
Plain and simple the e902 captures the kick the way it sounds clear and pumping! If you are not sure which mic to get for kick drum this one will even your playing field! I can't wait to mix these solid tones! No hassle

Beast

Watching shootouts on youtube, this one always stood out to my ears. I had been using an e614, and although it isn't meant for low end input per se', it has the same range of specs as the 902 and has proven itself in the past. In the current environment the drum set is in, for whatever reason, the 614 just sounded too soft. I actually wanted the Earthworks mic for low end frequencies but, at more than twice the price, I decided to get the 902 and it's a beast. Not so much a low end difference, some, but the punch and articulation are vastly improved. The guitarist noticed the difference immediately, when he listen to the files. A great purchase for me.

Great for Bass Cabinets

This seems like the most accuratemirophone I have found for recording bass cabinets. The low end seems natural, not over hyped or boomy due to the proximity effect. The end ehd rolls off gently allowing the sound of thcabinet to come through without being too colored by the mic itself. It does seem to require a bit more gain than I expected, but it is dead quiet so that is not an issue if you have a clean preamp. This is worth considering before you buy a higher priced, more 'traditional' mic for the job.
