Rediscover the Joy of Playing

Whether you're rocking Rachmaninoff or a blistering synth lead, keyboard feel is everything. As your fingers glide across the Kurzweil SP6's 88 weighted-hammer-action keys, you're rediscovering the joy of playing. The sonic performance is brilliant across the board; from the high-definition Japanese C7, German D, and Triple Strike acoustic concert grands, to electric piano, clavinet, harpsichord, celeste, crotales — and more, including PC3 series and Kore 64 expansions. Add reverb from the onboard multi-FX engine. Mobilize any of eight arpeggiators. There are so many more powerful features, yet the SP6 is quick and easy to navigate. And weighing in at under 27 pounds, the Kurzweil SP6 is makes a great gigging keyboard.

Load sounds instantly with FlashPlay technology

You've got 2GB of killer sounds in the Kurzweil SP6, and the best part is that you can load any sound instantly. Kurzweil calls it FlashPlay technology, and it means you'll never slow down or botch a performance due to loading times. Kurzweil knows what you need to perform with confidence, and you get it all in the SP6.

Packed with powerful features — and control

When you're performing onstage, you don't need a stage piano that fights you back. To that end, Kurzweil fortified the SP6 with a powerful feature set that not only loads sounds instantly, it lets you navigate fast. The onboard FX Engine delivers a full range of editable effects, from reverbs, delays, and dynamics to rotary speaker simulation for your organ patches. Eight arpeggiators let you whip up compelling rhythmic patterns quickly. And to command it all, you get 20 fully programmable physical controllers.

Dynamically-allocated polyphony for seamless sonic performance

While it's not a new feature for Kurzweil, it's one of our favorites here at Sweetwater: dynamic allocation of polyphony. The implementation of this technology in the SP6 means you'll never hear notes "drop off" when you reach maximum polyphony. So even if you're playing heavily-layered sounds with lots of effects, the SP6 is selective about which voices to drop in favor of new ones. You don't really need to think about it, but it's a huge deal when you hear how seamless and natural performances sound even with complex layered patches.

Excellent Rig

Great purchase all of the way around. My Rep, Alan Finkbeiner, was, as always, incredible.

Kurzweil Sp6

I really like the variety of sounds it has. For me it is both a keyboard an synthesizer. I'm eager to play it in the band I'm in once things return to normal after the end of the Coronavirus.
Music background: I've played in church and for quartets.

LOVE THIS BOARD!

Great feel on the weighted full size keys, and I love the sounds this thing makes. I'm blown away. Kurzweil hit a home run on this one- a great value in my opinion.

Hands down winner

I am a producer, composer and mixer having worked in the IMAX field for many years. I have tons of plugins for my work as well as 3 acoustic pianos in my studio and a wide variety of other classic keyboards. I spend a great deal of money every year just tuning and regulating my pianos so they will be even sounding with a wide range of dynamic possibilities. I have been playing on an old Yamaho P-120 for the occasional live gig and It was time to hopefully find a more advanced stage piano. I was particularly looking for a good sounding piano with a nice variety of other sounds all in a keyboard with natural feeling action and a light enough weight so I didn"t have to think twice before throwing it into my car. I got my hands on the latest 4 keyboards from Yamaha, Roland, Kurzweil and Casio and spent several weeks putting them all to the test both in the studio and in a live setting. Honestly, I can"t really know an instrument until I have worked with it for awhile. I do get an initial impression but things can change as I work with them.

Cutting directly to my final decision, the Kurzweil was hands down the most satisfying of the bunch. With regards to the pianos, there are several basic pianos to choose from rather than one piano eq"ed and effected in different ways. And that variety is very useful. A warm rich and natural grand piano that sounds beautiful when played in the studio or at a solo gig is usually too dark and complex for use in a band or even in a duo with an acoustic guitar. The primary 9" Steinway is very rich and factory patches give you a good variety of treatments to choose from. There is also a 7" Yamaha grand that is much less complex and downright funky. I am a little perplexed as to why this particular piano was chosen, the voicing is somewhat uneven and the strings are definitely from the last century. You can almost see the dust on the soundboard and the cigarette burns on the keyboard. But in a live setting it blends well with other instruments and sounds less formal and sophisticated. I believe there are also samples from older Kurzweils that work well in pop styles.

The thing that I find to be most annoying with all stage pianos is the fact that there are several different samples for a note in order to give you an approximate imitation of what happens when you play a real piano louder or softer. Where a real piano has a nearly infinite variety of sonic possibilities the electrics are limited to several samples per key. Sometimes playing slightly louder, triggers a new sample that can be distracting and disappointing if you have spent any time trying to develop your touch… a radical difference in sound without much difference in velocity. Also, most programmers feel that all the piano patches need to contain all levels from pp to fff. So you may actually play slightly harder toward the top of the velocity range and suddenly get a very loud and harsh note, ouch. This is also an area where the Kurzweil dominates. From what I could discern, it has many more sample per note. Know that the latest update is vastly superior to all that came before. And if you don"t mind getting under the hood, the computer based editor lets you get into the finest levels of editing you could hope for in a keyboard without the ability to sample. You can also design custom pianos for songs where you know you won"t need ff or fff samples so can play without worrying about unintended edgy samples. The editor, though somewhat buggy is fantastic and necessary for deep editing. I found myself getting up each morning and messing around with it. Hugely superior to other keyboards in this price range.

The variety of other sounds is quite nice and musical I found myself making music for hours while I was trying to get though all the sounds available… good Rhodes, Wurlitzer, strings, synths and such. Something for every gig really. Also, as a B3 player I was really knocked out by the organ inside. The factory patches here don"t really do it justice. I have already hooked it up to an inexpensive waterfall keyed controller and can manipulate all the drawbars, control the chorus percussion and other features on a real Hammond. And again, the external editor is great, allowing extensive choices of effects and Leslies. Playing the organ from the SP6 keyboard itself is a bit klutzy with regards to scrolling through 3 levels of 4 knobs to access all drawbars but it works and of course you can just memorize your favorite patches. Speaking of playing from the SO6 keyboard, the ability to instantly add reverb and delay (along with the fantastic ability to tap tempo your delay time and excellent onboard arpeggiator) makes each patch very flexible. I also found the action to be satisfying, I felt like I was connected to a real instrument.

Bottom line is I am still having fun every day playing with this thing and feel like I have a long way to go before I get my head around all of the possibilities. Plus after witnessing the huge improvement in the latest update which included more layers for the acoustic pianos, I anticipate more positive surprises from Kurzweil in the future. I would"t normally give anything 5 stars but in anticipation of someone giving it 1 star because it didn"t include their favorite zither sample, I"m going the full 5 here.

So if you want a keyboard that is priced right, fells good and is light weight with a wide variety of excellent factory sounds, or you want to get really deep and customize your own patches you should give the Kurzweil SP6 serious consideration. Personally, the search is over.

Awesome board for the price

Before this board, I had a Yamaha CP4, which was easily the nicest stage piano I'd ever played. At significantly less money (and weight), the SP6 is just as good, and in some features even better.

First and most basic, the acoustic pianos sound great. Nice variety of sounds to choose from, all tweakable with the on-board EQ with a little exploring of the edit options. EP's are fewer in choices, but what's there is very usable. Other sounds like strings and pads are top-notch, with some great choices to layer over the pianos.

Second most likely question asked is how's the action. Again, for the price and weight, I find it very good. It's a slight bit noisier that other digital pianos I've played -- all heavier and more expensive -- but certainly not annoyingly so. I can play as fast or faster than any other board, and I find it very close to a good acoustic piano.

Overall, the build quality is very solid, features are many, and the sound and action are excellent. If you need a stage piano with lots of extras for studio or to take along on gigs, the SP6 deserves a good look.
