High Performance and Big Value in a Digital Home Piano

In the market for a digital piano for your home? If performance and value are your top concerns, Sweetwater has an excellent suggestion: the Kawai KDP120. With its trim footprint and attractive finish, the KDP120 will grace any room. The KDP120 is packed with advanced technology and features such as onboard Alfred lessons and Dual and Four Hands modes to further you and your family’s developing pianistic skills. Kawai’s Responsive Hammer Compact II keyboard action gives you the feel of a real acoustic piano, while Harmonic Imaging technology with full 88-note stereo sampling and 192-note polyphony deliver a great selection of impeccable grand piano and other instrument sounds.

The feel of a real acoustic grand piano

Kawai developed their Responsive Hammer Compact II action used in the KDP120 to capture the distinctive feel of an acoustic grand piano. With an innovative hammer-sensing key detection that provides consistent upward/downward motion, this action gives you a natural, smooth piano playing experience. Just as acoustic piano hammers are heavier in the bass and get lighter as you move up toward the treble end of the keyboard, the Responsive Hammer Compact action uses different hammer weights that are graded for each playing range. This fastidious attention to detail gives you maximum stability when playing fortissimo passages, while giving you the delicate pianissimo control you need.

Harmonic Imaging technology delivers stunning sound

Sit down at the Kawai KDP120 and play. The stunning piano sound you hear is none other than the meticulously sampled sound of a handcrafted 9-foot Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano, with all 88 keys painstakingly recorded and faithfully reproduced using Kawai’s Harmonic Imaging technology. This proprietary process accurately re-creates the immense dynamic range of the grand piano, giving you a truly impressive measure of expressiveness, from ppp to fff. If this was the only sound onboard the KDP120, it would be a fabulous value, but there’s an entire collection of amazing sounds available, including orchestral strings, electric pianos, organs, vibes, harpsichord, choir, and more.

Features to nurture your development as a pianist

Kawai’s KDP120 digital piano includes a 3-song recorder, which lets you record your performances to internal memory and play them back at the touch of a button. What’s more, there’s a cool lesson feature that helps aspiring pianists learn the piano using an onboard collection of etudes from Burgmüller, Czerny, and Beyer, as well as songs from popular Alfred course books. You can practice left- and right-hand parts for each piece separately, and adjust the tempo to master the more difficult passages. Dual and Four Hands modes (and dual headphone jacks) let you collaborate with a teacher or a duet partner, while 192-note polyphony is more than enough to ensure that all your notes are heard. Kawai’s Grand Feel pedal system replicates the feel and functionality of a real grand piano triple-pedal system. An improved sliding key cover and elegant finish complete this irresistible package.

Fabulous for the price

Given the price I paid for this piano, I did not expect it to be this awesome. I've been impressed since day one.
The keyed is quite good. Again, above the grade I expected in this price point. The sounds are limited, but adequate since it's a home piano.
The best thing is that every time a different person comes to my place to rehearse, they universally comment on how great this piano (sound and feel) is. Well done, Kawai and Sweetwater!

Home Piano Heaven

KDP120 is a great home piano. Previously, I had a gigging keyboard rig where this is and it was always a hassle to re-set it up at home. My spouse enjoys having the sounds of music in our dining room and we both missed it because I was too lazy to plug the rig back in when I got home.
Now, all I have to do is lift the lid, press one button, and start to play.
The action is decent. Definitely not the best I've felt, but it is fine for home use. The sounds are just broad enough if you need something other than the default piano. Access to the non-default sound will require the manual or the PianoRemote app.
I have really only played it using the default piano sound. This is actually an impressive piano sample set. And the speakers being under the keyboard _almost_ gives the sense of playing a real piano since the sound reverberations come from "inside" the piano.
The speakers are so carefully tuned that I've never heard them distort. Even with the volume full up, none of the built-in sounds are set to clip. That makes complete sense in a home piano.
Is this the best digital keyboard I've ever played? Not even close. Is a great piano for home use? Definitely.

Best musical purchase I’ve made

My prior piano was a Kawai ES110, and while I loved that piano I was looking for a "furniture piano" that I could put behind the sofa. Little did I realize that this KDP120 would change my life :). Having a beautiful piano in the middle of my apartment (not tucked in a music room) means that I sit down at the piano 5 or more times a day, even if it's only a couple minutes at a time. This has really accelerated my learning and has made the piano a part of my daily routine.

The action is very slightly stiffer than the ES110 but I still vastly prefer it to any of the Casio or Yamaha pianos I've tried in music stores. The 2x20W speakers really pump out the sound if I turn it up, and all of the onboard sounds are great (the SK-EX being the star of course). The usb midi works great - I put my laptop on top of the piano and record right into my DAW. The rosewood finish is beautiful.

Overall I couldn't be happier with this purchase, it's truly an amazing instrument. Kawai and Sweetwater have a customer for life.

One of the best purchases I've ever made...

I am so happy I finally received my piano! I ordered it a couple of days after Christmas but received it five months later in May. I knew there would be a delay before I made the order, but it was well worth the wait. My family and I are so in love with the sound, and I highly recommend playing with headphones in order to hear all the nuances. I like the action. I like the look of the piano. I know my piano skills are going to improve over the next few months. Overall, I'm impressed. I just wish I could have gotten the piano sooner.

Big things in a small package!

I don't have a lot of space in my apartment, but I still wanted a nice, compact digital piano to play on. This delivered just that and more! The speakers and range of dynamics, in addition to the hammer action keys, make both the sound and the playing experience nearly indistinguishable from a real piano, all without the size, weight, or maintenance of a real one. And that's not to mention the extra voices and other features too.

That being said, mine didn't come with assembly instructions, only a user manual and some operation guides. I'm not sure if that's intentionally not included or if there was a mistake somewhere along the line. Thankfully I was able to find some assembly walkthroughs on Youtube.

Aside from that, I've been immensely satisfied with my purchase, and I hope others can come to enjoy this great piece of gear too.
